Professional Biography:
Jean D. Carruthers, MD, is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Opthalmology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, where she specializes in aesthetic facial ophthalmology. Dr. Carruthers is a Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and Fellow of The American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She has been invited to give more than 100 presentations worldwide on topics in cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Carruthers has authored more than 85 scientific articles and 29 book chapters in peer-reviewed publications. With her husband, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, she pioneered the cosmetic use of botulinum A exotoxin and has remained at the forefront of research and teaching about this important therapeutic modality. Together they have authored a definitive textbook on the cosmetic use of botulinum neurotoxin type A, which was published in 2003. Her clinical expertise comprises cosmetic and therapeutic use of botulinum A exotixin, Aesthetic Fillers, Aesthetic Facelift, cosmetic laser-assisted upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty, and a panoply of ablative and nonablative resurfacing procedures and other soft tissue enhancement techniques.

Dr. Carruthers is the past president of the Canadian Laser Aesthetic Surgery Society, currently trustee of the American Association for Cosmetic Surgery. She is an international editor for Dermatologic Surgery, Archives of Dermatology, Journal of Cosmetic Laser Surgery, and American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Carruthers has been profiled in numerous publications including Best Doctors in Canada, The New York Times, Allure magazine, Time magazine, and Newsweek. She has also been featured on the television program 20/20.
